How to improve website design for better accessibility

July 25, 2022

As the internet becomes increasingly commonplace in our lives, it’s important to ensure everyone can access and use it. That’s where accessibility comes in. Website accessibility is ensuring that your website can be used by as many people as possible, regardless of their abilities or disabilities.

There are a number of reasons why accessibility is important. For one, it’s the right thing to do. Everyone deserves to be able to use the internet, and excluding people with disabilities is unfair. Additionally, accessible websites tend to be better designed overall. Making your website accessible forces you to think about things like usability and user experience, which can only improve your website. And finally, accessible websites are required by law in many cases. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that all public-facing websites be accessible to people with disabilities, and there are similar laws in other countries as well.

Making Your Website Accessible

So how do you make your website accessible? There are a few different things you can do.

First, you must ensure that people with disabilities can use your website. This includes ensuring that your site can be navigated using a keyboard instead of a mouse and that it can be read by screen-reading software. You should also provide alternate versions of any non-text content on your site, such as videos with captions or images with alt text.

Second, you need to ensure that your website is usable by everyone. This means things like making sure your site works well on mobile devices and that it loads quickly. It also means ensuring that your content is easy to understand and that your site is easy to navigate.

Finally, you must ensure that your website is accessible to people with disabilities. This includes providing alternate versions of any non-text content on your site, such as videos with captions or images with alt text. You should also provide a way for people to contact you if they have questions or problems accessing your site.

Tips for Improving Accessibility

There are a few things you can do to improve the accessibility of your website:

1. Use clear and concise language in all of your content. This will make it easier for everyone to understand what you’re saying.
2. Use headings and subheadings to break up your content and make it easier to scan.
3. Use bullet points or lists whenever possible. This will make your content easier to digest.
4. Make sure your site works well on mobile devices. This includes ensuring your site is responsive and that all your content can be easily viewed on a small screen.
5. Use alt text for all images and videos on your site. This will ensure that people with visual impairments can still access your content.
6. Provide captions for all videos on your site. This will ensure that people who are deaf or hard of hearing can still access your content.
7. Make sure your site loads quickly. This will ensure that people with slow internet connections can still access your site.
8. Provide a way for people to contact you if they have any questions or problems accessing your site. This could be an email address, phone number, or link to a contact form.
9. Regularly test your site for accessibility issues and fix any problems you find.
